Bourke's parakeets (Neopsephotus bourkii) typically live 8–13 years (Merck, grass parakeets); the World Parrot Trust gives 12. The longest in zoo records lived 19.4 years (Young et al. 2012). Wild birds live shorter lives (ADW). They are quiet, gentle and most active at dawn and dusk.

Bourke parakeet lifespan: how long do they live?
The Merck Veterinary Manual gives grass parakeets — the small Australian group that includes Bourke's parakeet — an average lifespan of 8–13 years, and that's the range this calculator uses. The World Parrot Trust gives Bourke's a longevity of 12 years. The longest Bourke's in a 2012 study of zoo parrot records reached 19.4 years (Young et al.).
So a Bourke's parakeet lifespan is a little longer than a budgie's and much shorter than a ringneck's. Animal Diversity Web says captive Bourke's parrots probably live about as long as budgerigars, and that their lifespan in the wild is shorter. Some bird keepers report Bourke's living into their late teens or beyond; the Northern Parrots fact sheet says up to 25, but we couldn't find a documented case.
| Source | Figure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Merck Veterinary Manual | 8–13 years | Grass parakeets, including Bourke's |
| World Parrot Trust | 12 years | Longevity in its parrot encyclopedia |
| Northern Parrots fact sheet | usually 10–15, up to 25 | Bird retailer; not a veterinary source |
| Zoo records (Young et al. 2012) | 6.1 years median; 19.4 max | 155 birds that reached age 4 |
| AnAge database | 12.6 years | Longest in its (small) sample |
Bourke's parakeet lifespan in captivity vs the wild
Wild Bourke's live in the arid interior of Australia, from coastal Western Australia across to western Queensland and New South Wales (World Parrot Trust). They are nomadic: the World Parrot Trust says a flock may settle in an area for a few years and then vanish, and in dry spells up to a thousand birds can gather at a waterhole. Animal Diversity Web says they feed and drink at dawn and dusk and may be active all night when the moon is bright.
For a Bourke parakeet in the wild, no study gives a figure for how long it lives; ADW says only that it is shorter than in captivity. Drought, heat and predators at waterholes are the obvious dangers. A pet Bourke's escapes those, which is why captive birds outlive wild ones.
Bourke's parakeet life stages and when they mature
AnAge records that captive Bourke's have bred from about two years old, so the calculator ends the juvenile stage at 2 years. Chicks fledge at about four weeks (Northern Parrots).
| Stage | Age | What's happening |
|---|---|---|
| Juvenile | Hatch – breeds from about 2 years (AnAge) | Learning, moulting into adult colours, fastest growth |
| Adult | breeds from about 2 years – 8 years | Breeding age; the long, stable middle of life |
| Senior | 8 – 13 years | Inside the typical captive range: more vet checks, easier access to food and perches |
| Beyond typical lifespan | over 13 years | A bonus; longest documented: 19.4 years in zoo records (Young et al. 2012); 12.6 (AnAge) |
Because a Bourke's typical life is about a decade, the senior stage begins early — at 8 years in our calculator. That's a cue to watch weight and mobility more closely, not a forecast.
Health problems that affect Bourke's parakeet lifespan
We found no veterinary source listing diseases specific to Bourke's. They share the risks of other small parrots: obesity and fatty liver on seed-only diets (VCA), egg binding in hens, infections such as psittacosis that birds can carry silently (VCA), and, in older birds, cataracts, arthritis and tumours (Merck). Merck notes grass parakeets "tend to be nervous", and a panicking bird can injure itself flying into cage bars or windows at night. As always, an avian vet is the right person for any health concern.
How to help your Bourke's parakeet live longer
- Annual avian-vet visits — PetMD advises yearly check-ups with bloodwork for small parrots.
- A mixed diet: Northern Parrots says Bourke's do best on a pelleted and seed-based diet with fresh fruit and vegetables; VCA links seed-only feeding to obesity.
- Room to fly: grass parakeets are flyers rather than climbers, so a long flight cage or daily flying time suits them better than a tall cage.
- Gentle enrichment: forage trays with seeding grasses and greens on the floor of the cage match how they feed in the wild.
Bourke's vs budgie lifespan
Bourke's and budgies are both small Australian parrots of similar size, and Animal Diversity Web suggests their captive lifespans are similar. Merck's averages put Bourke's slightly ahead — 8–13 years for grass parakeets against 5–10 for budgies — and the longest Bourke's in zoo records (19.4 years) also beat the longest zoo budgie (18.0). Both are far shorter-lived than the medium parakeets; see the parakeet lifespan calculator to compare every type.
Bourke's parakeet as a quiet pet: care that adds years
Bourke's are among the quietest parrots you can keep. Merck describes grass parakeets as small, quiet and usually not aggressive, but nervous, and says they generally don't talk. Animal Diversity Web calls Bourke's "quiet and gentle", and Northern Parrots says they are usually noisier only at sunrise and sunset. That calm temperament shapes the care that keeps them healthy:
- Keep the room calm. Nervous birds stress easily; place the cage away from busy doorways, other pets and sudden noise.
- Mind the dusk and dawn. Because Bourke's are active at twilight and may fly on moonlit nights (ADW), a dim night light and soft perching areas help prevent night-time crashes.
- Choose companions carefully. Bourke's are gentle and non-aggressive (Northern Parrots), so they can be bullied by bigger or pushier birds such as budgies. Same-species company is safest.
- Keep them warm and dry. Bourke's come from a dry climate; avoid damp, draughty rooms and sudden temperature swings.
- Watch quietly. A quiet bird gives few clues when it's ill. Weekly weighing and a daily look at droppings and appetite catch problems a silent bird won't announce.
Rosy Bourke's lifespan
Asked about the rosy Bourke lifespan? Rosy, fallow, lutino and cinnamon Bourke's are colour forms produced by selective breeding. We found no source showing that the rosy or any other colour changes lifespan, so the calculator uses the same 8–13-year range for all of them.
How this Bourke's parakeet lifespan calculator works
Using Merck's 8–13-year range for grass parakeets, the average is 10.5 years. A 1-year-old Bourke's has used about 10% of it; a 5-year-old 48%, with about 5.5 years left on average; a 9-year-old 86%, in the senior stage. The "to 15 years" figure counts toward the 10–15-year span keepers report. Ages beyond 25, the highest figure reported anywhere, show a friendly message. No source gives males and females different lifespans, and the checklist adds tips without changing the numbers.
