Quick answer

Ragdolls typically live 12–17 years (Purina UK; PetMD: up to 17). In UK vet records, the median age at death was 12.9 years (O'Neill 2025, 133 deaths), and life tables give a life expectancy at birth of 10.31 years (Teng 2024). The biggest breed-specific health factor is inherited heart disease: Ragdolls with two copies of the MYBPC3 R820W variant had a median survival of just 5.7 years (Borgeat 2014), so an HCM DNA test matters.

Ragdoll cat lifespan: how long do Ragdolls live?

Most Ragdolls live 12 to 17 years. That is the range in Purina UK's breed profile, and PetMD's vet-reviewed guide says the breed can live "up to 17 years". Real-world records sit near the lower half of that range: in a 2025 study of Ragdolls seen by UK vets, the median age at death was 12.9 years. So the honest answer to "how long do Ragdoll cats live?" is "usually into their early or mid teens", with some reaching their late teens and a few passing 20.

Those three numbers measure different things, which is why they don't match exactly. A breed profile describes a healthy, well-cared-for cat. A median age at death describes every Ragdoll that died in a given year, including kittens lost to illness and young cats killed on roads. How long does a Ragdoll cat live in your home? That depends far more on its heart genetics, weight, teeth and environment than on any single average.

Ragdoll life span at a glance

  • Typical range: 12–17 years (Purina UK); up to 17 (PetMD).
  • Median age at death in UK vet records: 12.9 years, with the middle half of deaths between 5.7 and 16.1 years (O'Neill 2025).
  • Oldest Ragdoll in those records: 21.5 years at death; the oldest Ragdoll still alive in the 21,358-cat population was 23.2.
  • Biggest inherited risk: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) linked to the MYBPC3 R820W variant.
  • Most common recorded cause of death: kidney disorders (21.18% of deaths with a recorded cause).

How old do Ragdoll cats live, then, and how long do Ragdoll cats live for in a typical home? Plan for roughly 13 to 16 years of companionship, and treat anything beyond 17 as a bonus earned by good genes and good care. The calculator above uses the 12–17 year range and its midpoint, 14.5 years, to show how far through a typical life your cat is.

Ragdoll life expectancy: what studies and breed data show

The best evidence on life expectancy for Ragdoll cats comes from VetCompass, a Royal Veterinary College programme that analyses anonymised records from UK vet practices. Its 2025 Ragdoll study looked at 21,358 Ragdolls under veterinary care in 2019 — 1.70% of all cats in the dataset — and reviewed the full records of a random 2,025. Ragdolls are a fast-rising breed: they made up 0.70% of cats born in 2005 but 3.72% of those born in 2019. Of the reviewed cats, 133 died during the study year, at a median age of 12.9 years.

The authors compared that with earlier UK data showing a median of 14 years for cats overall and 12.5 for purebred cats, and concluded that Ragdoll life expectancy is "largely typical for purebred cats". In other words, Ragdolls don't appear to be a short-lived breed; they share the slightly shorter lives seen across pedigree cats compared with moggies.

A separate 2024 VetCompass analysis built life tables from 7,936 UK cat deaths. It gave Ragdolls a life expectancy at birth of 10.31 years (95% confidence interval 8.86–11.76), based on 69 deaths, with individual lifespans running from a few months to 21.3 years. Life expectancy at birth is always lower than a typical adult lifespan, because it counts every early death.

Two older sources look gloomier. A 2009–2012 study of cats in England recorded a median Ragdoll age at death of just 10.1 years, and Swedish insurance data from 2003–2006 gave Ragdolls the lowest chance of reaching 10 of nine common breeds. The 2025 authors point out a catch: when a breed is booming, most of its cats are young, so the few deaths that happen are skewed towards young cats. The median Ragdoll in the 2025 study was only 2.6 years old. As the breed's population ages, its recorded life expectancy is likely to look more normal.

Life expectancy of a Ragdoll cat that has reached adulthood

Your cat's outlook improves with every birthday it passes. There is no published life table for Ragdolls alone, so the calculator reads the 2024 UK life table for purebred cats at your cat's exact age, and adjusts it with the female and male tables when you pick a sex. This table comes from the same function:

Average years remaining for UK purebred cats by age, with female and male adjustment (Teng et al. 2024)

For example, a purebred cat that has reached 8 has about 6.3 years left on average, pointing to a total of around 14.3. A 14-year-old has about 2.8 years left. These are population averages: a lean, heart-tested indoor Ragdoll may well beat them.

Average lifespan of a Ragdoll cat compared with other breeds

The 2024 UK life tables report life expectancy at birth for 11 breed groups that had at least 15 recorded deaths. Ragdolls sit in the middle of the pedigree pack: behind Burmese, Birmans, Siamese and Persians, and ahead of Norwegian Forest Cats, Maine Coons, British cats, Bengals and Sphynx.

Bengal8.51 years7.12–9.9073
Sphynx6.68 years4.53–8.8318

On these figures, the Ragdoll vs Maine Coon lifespan gap is small (10.31 vs 9.71 years at birth, with overlapping confidence intervals), so neither breed clearly outlives the other; see the Maine Coon lifespan calculator for that breed's full picture. For Ragdoll vs Siamese lifespan, the Siamese comes out a little ahead (11.69 years), and breed guides often give Siamese 15–20 years — compare on our Siamese cat age calculator. Crossbred cats beat most pedigrees at 11.89 years.

Ragdoll mix lifespan

No study has looked at Ragdoll crosses on their own. In the 2024 UK analysis, crossbred cats lived about 1.27 years longer than purebred cats once other factors were accounted for, so a Ragdoll mix may do slightly better than a pedigree Ragdoll. A mix can still inherit the R820W heart variant from a Ragdoll parent, though, so the same heart checks apply. The VetCompass researchers also noted they could not tell registered pedigree Ragdolls from cats simply described as Ragdolls.

Indoor vs outdoor Ragdolls: how long do they live?

No study has split Ragdolls by lifestyle, so the best guide is data for cats in general. Chewy's vet-reviewed guide gives indoor cats an average of 13–17 years and outdoor cats only 2–5 years, mainly because of traffic, fights, infections and bad weather. Cats with outdoor access face the same hazards, just less often.

  • How long do indoor Ragdoll cats live? There is no breed-specific figure, but an indoor Ragdoll avoids most accidental deaths and has the best chance of reaching the 12–17 year range. In the 2025 UK study, traumatic injury still accounted for 5.88% of Ragdoll deaths with a recorded cause.
  • Ragdoll lifespan outdoors: unknown for the breed, but the general outdoor-cat average of 2–5 years shows how large the risk can be.
  • Infection risk: Ragdolls had a significantly higher risk of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) than other cats in a US hospital study, and FIP comes from feline coronavirus, which spreads between cats. Fewer contacts with unknown cats is one more argument for an indoor life.

Ragdolls are famously relaxed and people-focused, which suits indoor living well. If you'd like to give yours fresh air, a secure catio, a cat-proofed garden or supervised harness time offers most of the benefit with far less risk. Choose the lifestyle in the calculator to see the matching note.

Male vs female Ragdoll lifespan

The 2025 VetCompass study recorded a median age at death of 13.7 years for female Ragdolls (58 deaths) and 11.4 years for males (75 deaths). That looks like a big gap, but it was not statistically significant — with so few deaths, it could easily be chance. So there is no proven difference between male Ragdoll lifespan and female Ragdoll lifespan.

Across all breeds, the 2024 UK life tables found that females lived about 1.3 years longer than males from birth, and the calculator applies that general difference when you choose a sex. One real sex difference within the breed: obesity was recorded in 8.54% of male Ragdolls against 5.09% of females in a single year, and male Ragdolls were also more likely to have traumatic injuries recorded. Keeping a male lean is one of the simplest ways to protect his lifespan.

Ragdoll health problems that affect life expectancy

This is general information to help you talk to your vet; it isn't a diagnosis or treatment guide. The 2025 UK study found that the most common disorders in Ragdolls were everyday problems — periodontal disease (8.84%), diarrhoea (7.11%) and obesity (6.91%) — while a veterinary textbook it cites lists published predispositions to 13 conditions, including HCM, FIP and several types of bladder stone. The conditions below matter most for lifespan.

Ragdoll HCM (heart disease)

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy thickens the heart muscle so it fills and pumps less efficiently. Cornell Feline Health Center describes it as the most common heart disease in cats; it can cause heart failure, dangerous blood clots and sudden death, often with no warning signs. Ragdolls carry a breed-specific genetic variant, covered in detail in the next section. A heart murmur was recorded in 1.19% of UK Ragdolls in one year, and heart disorders rose to 5.81% in Ragdolls aged 7 and over.

Ragdoll kidney disease

Kidney disorders were the leading recorded cause of death in UK Ragdolls, accounting for 21.18% of deaths with a known cause, and Ragdolls recorded with chronic kidney failure had a median age of 14.4 years. Kidney problems were recorded in 8.37% of Ragdolls aged 7 and over. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD), the inherited cyst disease of Persians, is rare in the breed: only 1 of 1,114 Ragdolls in a large DNA panel study carried the PKD1 variant, although Purina's profile still lists it, and a DNA test exists.

Ragdoll bladder stones and urinary problems

PetMD lists bladder stones as a Ragdoll concern that can be "painful and can be serious, or even life-threatening", especially if a stone blocks the urethra. A UK referral study found Ragdolls were one of five breeds with higher odds of stones in the kidneys or ureters than non-pedigree cats, and the textbook cited in the 2025 study lists calcium oxalate, struvite and urate stones for the breed. Urinary disorders were recorded in 5.81% of Ragdolls aged 7 and over. Straining, frequent small trips to the litter box, crying while urinating or blood in the urine need a vet promptly; a male cat that can't pass urine is an emergency.

FIP

A 16-year study at a US veterinary teaching hospital found Ragdolls had a significantly higher risk of feline infectious peritonitis than mixed-breed cats. The 2025 study also cites Japanese data in which 88.10% of Ragdolls had antibodies to feline coronavirus, against 31.2% of crossbreds. Most coronavirus infections cause mild or no illness; FIP develops only when the virus mutates, but it is serious. Ask your vet about current treatment options if FIP is ever suspected.

Obesity

The CFA notes that Ragdolls are "known for their love of food" and may be at risk of obesity, and UK vets recorded obesity in 6.91% of Ragdolls in a single year. Cornell estimates that about half of cats seen at clinics are overweight or obese, and that obese cats are 4.5 times more likely to develop diabetes. Extra weight also strains joints, which PetMD flags for this large breed.

Dental disease

Periodontal disease was the single most common Ragdoll disorder in the UK study. Ragdolls actually had lower odds of periodontal disease than crossbred cats in a 2023 study (0.57 times the odds), but dental problems still climbed steeply with age, reaching 32.33% of Ragdolls aged 7 and over. Dental disease in cats has been linked with chronic kidney disease, which makes mouth care part of protecting a Ragdoll's lifespan.

What do Ragdoll cats usually die from?

Of the 85 UK Ragdoll deaths with a recorded cause in 2019, these were the most common. "Poor quality of life" usually means an older cat with several problems that was put to sleep to prevent suffering.

HCM and genetic testing in Ragdolls

In 2007, researchers found a substitution in the MYBPC3 gene of Ragdolls with HCM, now known as R820W (renamed R818W in newer genome coordinates, so lab reports may use either name). It is different from the variant found in Maine Coons, so a Maine Coon HCM test won't detect it.

  • How common was it? When 2,018 Ragdolls from the British Isles were tested, 27% carried it: 25.6% with one copy and 1.4% with two (Casamian-Sorrosal 2014).
  • Is it falling? In a 2022 panel of over 11,000 cats, only 33 of 1,115 Ragdolls (3.0%) carried it, and the authors suggest breeders' testing has reduced it.
  • Does it matter? Yes, especially with two copies. A survey of 236 genotyped Ragdolls found these median survival times:
Ragdoll survival by MYBPC3 R820W genotype (Borgeat et al. 2014, 236 cats)
GenotypeMedian survivalWhat it means
No copies (clear)more than 15.2 yearsNormal life expectancy
One copy (heterozygous)more than 16.7 yearsNormal life expectancy; low early risk of clinical HCM
Two copies (homozygous)5.7 yearsMuch more likely to die of heart disease, and sooner

In 2024, an international group of geneticists classified the Ragdoll variant as pathogenic and recommended routine testing for it in the breed. The DNA test uses a cheek swab or blood sample. Because HCM also has causes that no test detects, International Cat Care advises combining DNA results with heart ultrasound (echocardiography) by a vet, and not breeding from cats diagnosed with HCM. In practice that means:

  • Buying a kitten: ask for both parents' R820W results. Two "clear" parents can't pass the variant on.
  • Owning a Ragdoll: if its status is unknown, ask your vet about a DNA test and whether a heart scan makes sense, particularly if a murmur is heard or before an anaesthetic.
  • Ragdoll genetic testing beyond HCM: blood typing matters for breeders. The 2022 DNA panel found a blood-type variant seen only in Ragdolls, and the rare type AB in 2.2% of them; mismatched blood types between parents can cause a fatal reaction in newborn kittens.

The oldest Ragdoll cat on record

We could not find a verified record for the oldest Ragdoll. Guinness World Records doesn't keep a breed-by-breed category, and the online claims we found could not be checked against a primary source, so we don't repeat them. What we can verify comes from veterinary data:

  • The oldest Ragdoll among 133 deaths in the 2025 UK study was 21.5 years old.
  • The 2024 UK life tables recorded Ragdoll lifespans up to 21.3 years.
  • The oldest living Ragdoll in the 21,358-cat VetCompass population was 23.2 years old.

For context, the oldest cat ever verified by Guinness, Creme Puff, reached 38 years 3 days. A realistic Ragdoll max age is therefore in the early twenties, and the calculator shows a special message for any cat past the oldest Ragdoll in the UK data.

Can a Ragdoll live 20 years?

Yes, but it's uncommon. Ragdolls in UK vet records have died at over 21, so 20 is clearly possible. In the 2024 life table for all purebred cats, only 19 of 819 (about 2%) reached 20, while about 26% reached 15. A 20-year-old Ragdoll has lived about 138% of the 14.5-year midpoint used by the calculator.

How to help your Ragdoll live longer

Nothing guarantees a long life, but these steps match the evidence above and the checklist in the calculator. Tick what you already do there to see personalised tips.

  • Know the heart status: get the R820W DNA result (yours or the parents') and ask your vet about echocardiography if anything is unclear (International Cat Care, Borgeat 2014).
  • Keep your Ragdoll lean: aim for a WSAVA body condition score of 5 out of 9, with ribs easy to feel and a visible waist. Measure food rather than free-feeding a breed known for its appetite (CFA).
  • Protect the kidneys and bladder: encourage drinking with fresh water in several places, and ask your vet about urine and blood tests as your cat ages, since kidney disease was the top recorded cause of death.
  • Look after the teeth: brush if your cat accepts it and have the mouth checked at every visit (Cornell).
  • See the vet regularly: at least yearly as an adult, and about every six months once your Ragdoll is a senior (AAHA/AAFP).
  • Groom twice a week: the British Ragdoll Cat Club warns that knots form under the legs if grooming is neglected, and haircoat problems were more common in Ragdolls (4.00%) than in cats overall (2.6%).
  • Keep risks outside: indoor living or a catio avoids traffic, fights and contact with unknown cats.

If you're wondering how to make a Ragdoll cat live longer, it really comes down to those habits applied consistently over many years: a known heart status, a lean body, healthy teeth and kidneys, a safe home and a vet who knows your cat.

Senior Ragdoll care and signs of aging

Under the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines, a cat is a senior once it is over 10. PetMD's vet-written guide to ageing cats lists the usual signs of an old Ragdoll, as for any older cat:

  • Cloudier eyes as the lens ages (nuclear sclerosis), and sometimes cataracts
  • Loss of muscle along the back and hips, with looser skin
  • A coat that turns scruffy or matted because the cat grooms less
  • More tartar and gum disease
  • Stiffness, less jumping and more sleep

For senior Ragdoll cat care, build on those signs. Because the semi-long coat knots easily, help your older Ragdoll with gentle combing, especially under the legs and belly. Offer low-entry litter trays, ramps to favourite spots and warm beds. Weigh your cat every month, because unexplained weight loss often comes before other signs of kidney disease, thyroid problems or dental pain. Watch thirst and litter habits closely, given the breed's kidney and urinary record. Our senior cat age calculator has care tips for every age from 7 to 30.

How this Ragdoll lifespan calculator works

% of lifespan used = age ÷ 14.5 years × 100 · average years left = UK purebred life-table years left at this age (× female or male factor)

The calculator uses the 12–17 year range from Purina UK, which matches PetMD's upper limit of 17, and takes its midpoint of 14.5 years as the "typical" lifespan. A 1-year-old Ragdoll has used about 7% of it, a 5-year-old 34%, a 10-year-old 69% and a 14-year-old 97%. Results above 100% simply mean your cat has passed the midpoint.

"Average years left" reads the 2024 UK life table for purebred cats at your cat's exact age, adjusted by the ratio of the female or male table to the all-cat table if you choose a sex. The life stage follows the AAHA/AAFP guidelines (kitten under 1, young adult 1–6, mature adult 7–10, senior over 10), and the timeline shows where your cat sits. Lifestyle and the health checklist add evidence-based notes and tips rather than changing the numbers, because no study puts a figure on them for Ragdolls.

Ages older than the oldest Ragdoll in UK vet records (21.5 years) get an "exceptional age" note, and ages past the oldest cat ever verified (38 years 3 days) show a friendly message instead of a result. The tool doesn't diagnose illness or predict a single cat's future. To convert your cat's age, use the Ragdoll age calculator; for weight by age, see the Ragdoll growth chart.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Ragdoll cats live?

Most Ragdolls live 12–17 years (Purina UK; PetMD says up to 17). In UK vet records the median age at death was 12.9 years (O'Neill 2025).

What is the life expectancy of a Ragdoll cat?

10.31 years from birth in a 2024 UK life-table study (95% CI 8.86–11.76). A Ragdoll that has already reached 5 has about 8.3 more years on average, and one that has reached 10 about 5.

How long do Ragdolls live indoors?

There's no Ragdoll-specific figure, but indoor cats in general live 13–17 years on average against 2–5 for outdoor cats (Chewy, vet-reviewed). Indoor life removes most accident risks.

Do indoor Ragdolls live longer?

Very likely. Indoor cats avoid traffic, fights and many infections, which cause many early deaths in outdoor cats. Ragdolls also have a higher FIP risk, and FIP comes from a virus spread between cats.

Can a Ragdoll live 20 years?

Yes, but it's rare. Ragdolls in UK vet records have died at up to 21.5 years, while only about 2% of purebred cats in the UK life table reached 20.

What do Ragdoll cats usually die from?

In UK vet records, kidney disorders were the most common recorded cause of death (21.18%), followed by poor quality of life in old age (12.94%), then cancers, lumps, respiratory disease and injuries (O'Neill 2025).

Do Ragdolls live longer than Maine Coons?

Only slightly, if at all. UK life tables give Ragdolls 10.31 years of life expectancy at birth and Maine Coons 9.71, with overlapping confidence intervals (Teng 2024).

Do Ragdolls live longer than Siamese cats?

No. Siamese cats had a slightly higher life expectancy at birth in the same UK study (11.69 vs 10.31 years), and breed guides usually give Siamese 15–20 years.

Do male or female Ragdolls live longer?

There's no proven difference. In UK vet records, females died at a median 13.7 years and males at 11.4, but the gap was not statistically significant. At age 5 the calculator estimates roughly 8.8 more years for a female Ragdoll versus 7.7 for a male.

How common is HCM in Ragdolls?

27% of 2,018 UK Ragdolls tested in 2014 carried the R820W variant, but only 3.0% of 1,115 Ragdolls in a 2022 DNA panel did, suggesting testing is working. Ragdolls with two copies had a median survival of 5.7 years.

Should I get my Ragdoll DNA tested for HCM?

Yes, if its status or its parents' status is unknown. The R820W variant is considered pathogenic and routine testing is recommended for the breed. Combine the result with your vet's advice on heart scans, because HCM can have other causes.

Do Ragdolls get bladder stones?

They can. PetMD lists bladder stones as a breed concern, and Ragdolls had higher odds of kidney and ureter stones than non-pedigree cats in a UK referral study. Straining or blood in the urine needs a vet promptly.

What is the oldest Ragdoll cat on record?

There's no verified Guinness record for the breed. The oldest Ragdoll in UK vet records died at 21.5 years, and the oldest still alive in that population was 23.2.

How can I make my Ragdoll cat live longer?

Know its HCM status, keep it lean, look after its teeth, encourage drinking, groom it twice a week, keep it safe indoors, and see the vet at least yearly — every 6 months once it's over 10.

What is the Ragdoll mix lifespan?

It hasn't been studied. Crossbred cats lived about 1.27 years longer than purebreds in the UK life-table study, so a Ragdoll mix may do a little better than the breed's 12–17 years, but it can still inherit the HCM variant.
