How Long Can a Mosquito Live Without Blood? Blood & Food Calculator

How long can a mosquito live without blood? For weeks, as long as it finds sugar — mosquitoes eat nectar, and females use blood only to make eggs. Without any food at all, though, they last just 2–12 days. Choose female or male, what it can get and the temperature to see its survival, when a blood-fed female will lay eggs and why mosquitoes don't die after biting.

Quick answer

Without blood (on sugar): a normal life — 19–67 days for females at 25 °C in the lab. Without any food: 2–12 days with water (3.8 on average), 2–6 days without (Manda et al. 2007). After a bite: eggs in about 3.8–8 days at 25 °C, then she bites again; she doesn't die after biting (UF/IFAS).

How long can a mosquito live without blood?

For weeks — because mosquitoes don't live on blood. Both males and females get their energy from flower nectar and other plant sugars, and "only female mosquitoes require a blood meal," which they use to make eggs (American Mosquito Control Association). So how long can a mosquito live without blood? As long as it can find sugar: a full normal life.

The numbers bear that out. In the lab studies behind our calculators, sugar-fed females lived 19–67 days at 25 °C (77 °F), and sugar-fed males 9.4–24 days (Doeurk et al. 2025; Marini et al. 2020; Ciota et al. 2014; Christiansen-Jucht et al. 2014). In a separate test of malaria mosquitoes in outdoor-temperature cages, those with sugar alone lived a median of 16 days and up to 35 (Manda et al. 2007).

What a female can't do without blood is reproduce. How long do mosquitoes live without blood — or "how long can mosquito live without blood", as it's often searched — is therefore the wrong worry for a homeowner: a female that hasn't bitten anyone is still alive and still looking for a host so she can lay her eggs.

Do mosquitoes need blood to survive?

No. Blood is a poor everyday food for them. In an indoor test hut, female mosquitoes fed only blood lived 14 days on average, while those fed only sugar lived 29 days (Okech et al. 2003). Sugar decreased the odds of death by about 85% compared with blood alone. A pooled analysis of 17 Aedes studies found the same pattern: sugar, water and blood each cut the risk of death sharply, and sugar and blood together were no better than sugar alone (Schmidt et al. 2018).

What do mosquitoes eat besides blood?

Mostly plant sugars: nectar, sap and juices from fruit and stems. "Both male and female mosquitoes are nectar feeders for their nutrition" (AMCA), and UF/IFAS describes adult yellow fever mosquitoes of both sexes feeding on plant nectar. In the Kenyan plant study, how long mosquitoes lived depended on how much sugar the plant offered: the best plant gave a median of 12 days, the poorest only 4 — barely better than water (Manda et al. 2007).

How long can mosquitoes live without food or sugar?

Only a few days. How long can a mosquito live without food — no sugar and no blood? And how long do mosquitoes live without food in a dry room? In the same study, mosquitoes given only water had a median survival of 3 days and a mean of 3.8 days (range 2–12), and those given nothing at all, not even water, a mean of 3 days (range 2–6) (Manda et al. 2007). Most were dead within five days.

Those lab figures are for the African malaria mosquito at 18–31 °C. We found no comparable starvation study that varied temperature, so the calculator's "Nothing" figures don't change with temperature. Dry air makes things worse: the risk of death rises steeply as humidity falls (Schmidt et al. 2018).

How long can a mosquito live without eating or feeding?

Put simply: how long can a mosquito live without eating is about three to four days, and how long can a mosquito live without feeding on blood is a normal lifetime, provided it has sugar. The difference is why a mosquito trapped in a bare room dies quickly, while one in a room with a fruit bowl or flowering plant can last for weeks.

Life span of a mosquito after it bites

A bite starts a cycle, not an ending. After a full blood meal the female rests while she digests it and develops a batch of eggs, then looks for water to lay them. The time from blood meal to egg laying — the gonotrophic cycle — has been measured for each species:

  • Yellow fever mosquito: 8.4 days at 24 °C, 7.1 at 27 °C and 4.9 at 30 °C (Goindin et al. 2015).
  • Asian tiger mosquito: 3.8 days at 25 °C and 3.3 at 30 °C (Marini et al. 2020).
  • Malaria mosquito: about 4.0–4.3 days (Christiansen-Jucht et al. 2015).

At 25 °C, the calculator puts egg laying at about 3.8–8 days after the bite, and at 30 °C 3.3–4.9 days. Then she seeks another blood meal and starts again. A female yellow fever mosquito can produce up to 5 batches of 100–200 eggs in her lifetime (UF/IFAS), and Italian Asian tiger mosquitoes completed 7.9 cycles on average at 25 °C in the lab (Marini et al. 2020).

How long does a mosquito live after biting you?

Usually days to weeks more. The life span of mosquito after bite — the days a female has left once she's fed — depends on what else she can eat: 14 days on average on blood alone in the indoor hut study, 33 days with sugar too (Okech et al. 2003). With sugar, a bite barely changes her remaining lifespan at all.

How many times can a mosquito bite?

Many times over her life — once or more per egg batch. A female yellow fever mosquito can lay up to five batches (UF/IFAS), each after a blood meal. Females of some species managed up to 11 egg-laying cycles in a lab study (Marini et al. 2020).

Do mosquitoes die after biting? Myth vs fact

Myth: a mosquito dies after it bites, like a honeybee after stinging.

Fact: biting costs a mosquito nothing. A honeybee dies because its barbed sting tears away from its body; a mosquito slides a fine set of mouthparts into the skin, drinks, and pulls them out again. The repeated egg batches above are the proof — each one needs a fresh blood meal (UF/IFAS; Marini et al. 2020). So do mosquitoes die after biting? No: a bite is the start of her next batch of eggs, and she will look for another meal a few days later.

That repeat feeding is also why mosquitoes matter for health: a female can pick up a virus or parasite in one meal and pass it on in a later one, which is why agencies such as the WHO urge bite prevention in affected areas.

How this calculator works

  • Sugar only: the lab lifespan range at your temperature for the sex you chose, from the same data as the mosquito lifespan calculator. For males, only the two Aedes species have temperature data; if none applies, the general "most males live under a week" figure is shown (Coachella Valley MVCD).
  • Nothing: 2–12 days with water (3.8 on average) and 2–6 days without (Manda et al. 2007). These were measured at 18–31 °C and don't change with temperature.
  • Has had a blood meal: the 14-day blood-only survival (Okech et al. 2003) and the measured time from blood meal to egg laying at your temperature for every species with data (Goindin et al. 2015; Marini et al. 2020; Christiansen-Jucht et al. 2015). Hours since the bite move the "now" marker along the timeline.

The same figures appear on the indoor survival calculator, so the two tools always agree.
