Quick answer

Adult Ragdoll males typically weigh 4.4–9.1 kg (9.7–20 lb) and females 3.4–6.8 kg (7.5–15 lb) (UK vet records, CFA); the median weighed adult is 5 kg for males and 3.8 kg for females (O'Neill 2025). Most stop gaining weight at about 2 years and reach full size at about 4 (CFA). Two examples from the calculator: a 3-month-old male usually weighs 1.4–1.8 kg (3–4 lb), and a 6-month-old female 1.8–2.7 kg (4–5.9 lb).

Estimates only. There is no veterinary growth standard for Ragdolls. These ranges combine a kitten birth-weight study, a general kitten growth chart, a Ragdoll breed chart, the CFA breed profile and the weights of 21,358 Ragdolls in UK vet records. A healthy body shape counts for more than any number in these tables, and your vet is the best judge of it.

How big do Ragdoll cats get?

How big do Ragdolls get in real life? They are a large breed on paper, but most are less heavy than their reputation. Breed sources describe big males: the CFA says it's "not unusual" for a mature male to reach or exceed 20 lb (9.1 kg), and PetMD says Ragdolls can grow to 20 lb. Real-world weights are more modest. When UK vets weighed 21,358 Ragdolls, the median adult male weighed 5 kg (11 lb) and the median adult female 3.8 kg (8.4 lb).

Both pictures are true. Registry and breeder figures describe well-grown show cats, often entire males, at their peak. The vet-record figures describe ordinary pet Ragdolls, including some from non-pedigree lines and some young adults still filling out. So how big can Ragdoll cats get? A big male can genuinely reach 9 kg or more — the heaviest Ragdoll in the UK records weighed 9.8 kg — but a pet Ragdoll of 4–6 kg is completely normal.

This page's typical adult range runs from the lower quartile of UK vet records to the top of the registry figures: 4.4–9.1 kg (9.7–20 lb) for males and 3.4–6.8 kg (7.5–15 lb) for females. That wide band reflects how much healthy Ragdolls vary. Nothing in it is a target weight; your vet judges the right weight for your cat from its body condition.

Ragdoll size compared to a normal cat

Ragdoll cat size is easy to overestimate. PetMD puts the average house cat at 8–12 lb, with most around 10 lb (4.5 kg). The median male Ragdoll in UK vet records (11 lb) is only a little heavier than that, and the median female (8.4 lb) is slightly lighter. Ragdolls often look much bigger than they weigh because of their long, plush coat and big frame. A registry-sized 20 lb male, on the other hand, is about twice the weight of an average cat.

We found no registry, veterinary or study source for Ragdoll body length or height, so we don't quote one. Length figures on fan sites can't be traced to measurements.

Ragdoll growth chart by age

This Ragdoll growth chart by age covers males and females from birth to 4 years. Each row is a typical range, not a target. The last column shows where the row comes from: sourced rows are anchors, and rows marked "interpolated" are filled in with a straight line between the anchors either side, exactly as the calculator does for any age you enter.

Two features stand out. First, males and females share one range until 3 months, because no source we could verify gives separate kitten weights by sex. Second, the low end of each range stops rising at 2 years while the high end keeps climbing to 4. That matches the evidence: UK vet records show most Ragdolls stop gaining weight at about 2, while the CFA says the biggest cats keep filling out to full size and weight at about 4.

Ragdoll weight chart: how the anchors were chosen

  • Birth: a 2023 study of 5,596 pedigree kittens in French catteries weighed 331 Ragdoll kittens, with a mean birth weight of 100.3 g (standard deviation 13.5 g). We use the mean plus or minus one standard deviation.
  • 1–8 weeks: Kitten Lady's general kitten chart. Ragdoll birth weight matches the average kitten, and a Ragdoll breed chart from Hepper (a pet blog, not vet-reviewed) gives almost identical weights at 1 and 2 months.
  • 3 months: Hepper's Ragdoll chart (3–4 lb). 12 months: Hepper's 6 lb as the low end, and the upper quartile of adult weights in UK vet records as the high end, separately for each sex.
  • 2 and 4 years: the lower quartile of UK vet records as the low end; Hepper's 15 lb at 2 years and the CFA's 20 lb (males) at 4 years as the high end.

How big do Ragdoll kittens get in their first year?

Very big, very fast. Kitten Lady notes that a healthy kitten should double its birth weight by one week, and by 8 weeks a Ragdoll kitten is usually eight to ten times heavier than at birth. UK vet records confirm that Ragdolls "grow rapidly during their first year".

  • 3 month old Ragdoll weight: about 1.4–1.8 kg (3–4 lb) for both sexes. Many breeders let kittens go to new homes at around 13 weeks.
  • 6 month old Ragdoll weight: males about 1.8–3.1 kg (4–6.8 lb), females about 1.8–2.7 kg (4–5.9 lb) (interpolated; Hepper's breed chart gives 5.5–6 lb).
  • 1 year old Ragdoll weight: males about 2.7–5.6 kg (6–12 lb), females about 2.7–4.4 kg (6–9.7 lb).

Weighing a Ragdoll kitten at home

A digital kitchen scale that reads in grams is the easiest tool for a young kitten; once your Ragdoll is too big, weigh yourself holding it on bathroom scales and subtract your own weight. Weigh at the same time of day, ideally before a meal, and write the result down. One reading tells you little, but a list of weekly weights shows at a glance whether your kitten is gaining steadily. Take the record to vet visits, and contact your vet if a kitten's weight stalls or drops between two weigh-ins.

How fast do Ragdolls grow?

Fastest in the first few months: from 8 weeks to 3 months the middle of the range rises by about 680 g, and from 3 to 12 months a typical male gains about 2.6 kg more and a typical female about 2 kg. After the first birthday, growth slows sharply. So how big do Ragdoll kittens get by their first birthday? Big enough to look like an adult at a glance, but often a few hundred grams to a kilogram short of their adult weight, and with a coat that is still developing.

When do Ragdolls stop growing?

There are two honest answers, depending on what you measure:

  • Weight on the scale: around 2 years for most pet Ragdolls. Bodyweight curves built from 125,355 weight records in UK vet practices show Ragdolls "continue to gain weight until around two years of age", then level off.
  • Full adult size: around 4 years, according to the CFA, which describes the breed as "slow-maturing, reaching full coat color at two years, and full size and weight at four". Purina UK also says Ragdolls are fully grown at about 4.

So when do Ragdoll cats stop growing? Most stop gaining weight by about 2, while big-framed cats, especially males, may keep filling out through the chest and shoulders until about 4. At what age is a Ragdoll full grown? Treat 4 years as the finish line. After that, any weight gain is far more likely to be fat than growth, which is when regular weigh-ins become important. Enter your cat's age above to see roughly how many months of growing it has left.

The British Ragdoll Cat Club captures the slow change well: a kitten looks different at 13 weeks, different again at 1 year, "even more beautiful at 2 years old", and develops into a "magnificent 4 year old adult".

How big can Ragdoll cats get? Male vs female size

Males are clearly bigger. In UK vet records, adult males had a median weight of 5 kg (middle half 4.4–5.6 kg (9.7–12 lb)) against 3.8 kg for females (middle half 3.4–4.4 kg (7.5–9.7 lb)), a statistically significant difference. The spread of adult weights shows it even more plainly:

4 to 5 kg (8.8–11 lb)32.89%40.47%
5 kg (11 lb) or more8.69%48.77%
  • Male Ragdoll weight: nearly half of adult males weighed 5 kg (11 lb) or more, and fewer than 1% weighed under 3 kg. Our typical adult range is 4.4–9.1 kg (9.7–20 lb).
  • Female Ragdoll weight: half of adult females weighed 3–4 kg (6.6–8.8 lb), and fewer than 1 in 10 reached 5 kg. Our typical adult range is 3.4–6.8 kg (7.5–15 lb).
  • At 1 year: males about 2.7–5.6 kg (6–12 lb), females about 2.7–4.4 kg (6–9.7 lb).

Individuals overlap a lot, so a large female can outweigh a small male. Pick the sex in the calculator for the matching range.

Is my Ragdoll underweight or overweight?

A growth chart tells you whether a weight is common, not whether it is healthy. Vets use a body condition score. On the 9-point WSAVA scale, 5 is ideal: from above you can see a waist behind the ribs, the ribs are easy to feel under a slight layer of fat, and there's only a small fat pad on the belly. With a long Ragdoll coat you have to feel rather than look, so run your hands along the ribs and spine.

Is my Ragdoll underweight?

  • You can easily feel, or see, the ribs, spine or hip bones.
  • Its weight has stalled or fallen over two or more weigh-ins.
  • It has diarrhoea, vomiting, a poor appetite or low energy. Diarrhoea was the second most common disorder recorded in UK Ragdolls.

Each of these signs is a reason to book a vet appointment, even if the weight sits inside the chart's range. Being "thin" was recorded in 7.67% of Ragdolls aged 7 and over, a reminder that weight loss in an older cat always needs checking. In newborns, birth weight matters: in the French cattery study, Ragdoll kittens under about 84 g at birth counted as low birth weight, a group with higher early mortality.

Overweight Ragdoll

A heavy Ragdoll isn't automatically fat, but overweight Ragdolls are common. UK vets recorded obesity in 6.91% of Ragdolls in a single year, more often in males (8.54%) than females (5.09%), and the CFA warns that the breed's love of food puts it at risk. Cornell links obesity to diabetes, arthritis and other problems. If the ribs are hard to feel or the waist has gone, ask your vet for a weight plan rather than cutting food drastically yourself.

What affects Ragdoll growth?

  • Genetics and sex: the parents' size is the best clue to a kitten's adult size, and males end up heavier than females.
  • Birth weight and early gain: Ragdoll litters in the French study averaged 4.3 kittens, and low birth weight was a risk factor for death in the first two months. A follow-up study of 5,504 kittens linked losing weight, or not gaining, between birth and day 2 to higher early mortality at any birth weight.
  • Diet: a complete kitten food matched to growth. Because Ragdolls mature slowly, ask your vet when to switch to adult food and how much to feed, rather than relying on the packet alone.
  • Neutering timing: a 1997 study found that cats neutered early had growth plates that closed later and slightly longer leg bones. Neutering has clear health benefits; discuss the timing with your vet.
  • Health: parasites, gut infections and other illnesses can all slow growth. Unexplained poor growth or weight loss is always a reason to see a vet.

Ragdoll size vs Maine Coon and other breeds

Ragdoll vs Maine Coon size is the comparison most people ask about. Both are large, slow-maturing longhairs, but breed guides put Maine Coons ahead: PetMD gives Maine Coon males 18–25 lb, and TICA says they can take 3–5 years to finish growing. In everyday terms, a typical pet Ragdoll is a medium-to-large cat, while a typical pet Maine Coon is noticeably larger — see the Maine Coon growth chart for that breed's ranges.

How this Ragdoll growth calculator works

Expected weight = typical range at this age (straight line between table rows) · % adult weight = middle of range ÷ median UK adult weight for the sex

Age → expected weight: enter your Ragdoll's age in weeks, months or years and choose male or female. The calculator reads the growth chart table above and draws a straight line between the nearest two rows, so a 5-month-old male gets a range between the 3- and 12-month rows. It also shows the growth stage, how the middle of the range compares with the median adult weight for the sex (a 6-month-old female is at about 58%), and how many months are likely to remain until full size at 2–4 years. Ages from 4 years use the adult range.

Is my Ragdoll on track? Add your cat's weight in kg or lb. The result compares it with the typical range for that age and sex, gives the distance in kg if it falls outside, and plots your cat on a range bar. For example, a 6-month-old male weighing 3.5 kg is 0.4 kg above the 1.8–3.1 kg range — a cue to check body condition, not a diagnosis. Weights that can't belong to a Ragdoll, or that are wildly out of line with the age, show a "please check" message, because they're usually a unit mix-up.

Limits: the kitten ranges partly come from a general kitten chart and a pet blog, and the adult ranges mix weighed pet cats with registry figures, so they describe what is typical rather than what is healthy. The calculator can't see your cat's body condition. To convert your cat's age, use the Ragdoll age calculator; for how long the breed lives, see the Ragdoll cat lifespan calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How big do Ragdoll cats get?

Adult males typically weigh 4.4–9.1 kg (9.7–20 lb) and females 3.4–6.8 kg (7.5–15 lb). In UK vet records the median adult male weighed 5 kg and the median female 3.8 kg, while the CFA says big males can reach 20 lb (9.1 kg) or more.

How much should a 6 month old Ragdoll weigh?

Typically 1.8–3.1 kg (4–6.8 lb) for a male and 1.8–2.7 kg (4–5.9 lb) for a female, although a lean, well-proportioned body shape is more important than landing inside the range.

How much should a 3 month old Ragdoll weigh?

About 1.4–1.8 kg (3–4 lb) for both males and females.

How much does a 1 year old Ragdoll weigh?

Usually 2.7–5.6 kg (6–12 lb) for a male and 2.7–4.4 kg (6–9.7 lb) for a female. Many are still filling out.

When do Ragdoll cats stop growing?

Most stop gaining weight at about 2 years (UK vet records), and the CFA says Ragdolls reach full size and weight at about 4.

How big do male Ragdolls get?

About 4.4–9.1 kg (9.7–20 lb) as adults on this page's range. The median adult male in UK vet records weighed 5 kg, and nearly half of adult males weighed 5 kg or more.

How much does a female Ragdoll weigh?

About 3.4–6.8 kg (7.5–15 lb) as an adult on this page's range; the median adult female in UK vet records weighed 3.8 kg, and half weighed 3–4 kg.

Are Ragdolls bigger than Maine Coons?

No. Breed guides put Maine Coons ahead: PetMD gives Maine Coon males 18–25 lb, while the CFA says Ragdoll males can reach or exceed about 20 lb. Both are large, slow-maturing breeds.

How much do Ragdoll kittens weigh at birth?

About 87–114 g. A study of 331 Ragdoll kittens found an average birth weight of 100.3 g; kittens under about 84 g counted as low birth weight.

How fast do Ragdoll kittens grow?

Fastest in the first months: a kitten doubles its birth weight in a week and weighs about 1.4–1.8 kg (3–4 lb) by 3 months. Growth then slows, with most weight gain finished by about 2 years.

How big is a Ragdoll compared with a normal cat?

The average house cat weighs about 10 lb (PetMD). The median male Ragdoll in UK vet records weighed 11 lb, so a typical pet Ragdoll is only a little heavier, though a registry-sized 20 lb male is about twice the size.

Is my Ragdoll overweight?

Run your hands along the ribs and check for a waist behind them. A WSAVA score of 5 out of 9 is ideal; if the ribs are hard to find under the fat and coat, ask your vet for a weight plan.

At what age is a Ragdoll full grown?

Treat about 4 years as full grown (CFA, Purina UK). Most Ragdolls reach their adult weight by around 2, but large males may keep filling out until 4.
