A 6-month-old rabbit is about 14 in human years, a 1-year-old about 20, a 2-year-old about 26, a 5-year-old about 44 and a 10-year-old about 74. After the first year, each rabbit year adds about 6 human years.
Rabbit years to human years: how old is my rabbit?
Rabbits grow up astonishingly fast. A newborn kit is blind and hairless, yet within a few months it is weaned, exploring and ready for a spay or neuter. By its first birthday a rabbit is an adult. That's why converting rabbit years to human years is not a simple multiplication: the first year counts for far more than the later ones.
This rabbit age calculator turns your bunny's age into a human-year equivalent using a published rabbit age chart: roughly 3 human years for each of the first 4 months (12 at 4 months), then about 1 human year per month until the first birthday (20 human years at 1 year), and after that about 6 human years for every rabbit year. So a 2-year-old rabbit is about 26, a 5-year-old about 44 and a 10-year-old about 74 in human years.
Choosing a breed doesn't change the human-year number — the chart is the same for every rabbit — but it does change the life stage, the senior age and the percentage of typical lifespan shown in your result, because a Flemish Giant and a Mini Lop age at very different speeds.

How the rabbit age calculator works
Unlike dogs and cats, rabbits have no age chart from a veterinary association. We searched veterinary, welfare and rescue sources and chose the most detailed published chart: Amy Pratt's "Rabbit Years to Human Years" on The Bunny Lady, written by a rabbit educator at the Humane Rescue Alliance. Its three-step rule — fast development in the first 4 months, slower growth to 12 months, then steady adult aging — matches the life stages that rabbit-care experts describe. Everbreed's rabbit chart uses the same anchors.
Two honest caveats. First, these conversions are a comparison of life stages, not a biological measurement — the charts are presented as estimates, and no scientific formula exists. Second, other calculators online use slightly different numbers (some put a 1-year-old rabbit at about 21 and add more years per birthday). The Bunny Lady's own printed table also drifts from its rule after age 8; we follow the rule exactly, so our numbers climb by a steady 6 per year.
Rabbit life stages
Oxbow Animal Health, whose article was written with a licensed veterinary technician, divides a rabbit's life into these stages:
- Baby (kit), birth to about 3 months: kits rely on their mother's milk and are weaned at around 3–6 weeks (PetMD says 4–8 weeks). A 3-month-old is about 9 in human years.
- Adolescent, 3–6 months: fast growth, lots of chewing, and the age to discuss spaying or neutering with a rabbit-savvy vet (Oxbow suggests around 3–6 months).
- Teenager, 6–12 months: about 14–20 in human years. Oxbow notes some large breeds may be considered adults as early as 9 months.
- Adult, 1 year until senior age: growth has slowed or stopped, and the diet moves to grass hay and measured pellets.
- Senior: Oxbow says rabbits generally reach their "golden years" around 5, while the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF) gives size-based ages — see below.
How long do rabbits live?
rabbit.org (the House Rabbit Society's site) says indoor house rabbits typically live 8–12 years, and many reach 14 or even 16. The RSPCA gives the same 8–12 year range, and PetMD notes that spayed or neutered rabbits generally live 8–12 years. Rabbits kept outdoors fare worse: rabbit.org puts outdoor domestic rabbits at about 3–5 years. Size matters too — small and dwarf breeds tend to outlive giant breeds.
| Breed | Typical lifespan | Lifespan in human years | Senior from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lionhead | 7–9 yrs | 56–68 | 6 yrs |
| Holland Lop | 7–10 yrs | 56–74 | 6 yrs |
| Mini Lop | 8–10 yrs | 62–74 | 6 yrs |
| Dutch | 5–10 yrs | 44–74 | 6 yrs |
| Mini Rex * | 9–10 yrs | 68–74 | 6 yrs |
| Rex | 6–8 yrs | 50–62 | 4 yrs |
| Flemish Giant | 5–10 yrs | 44–74 | 4 yrs |
| Continental Giant * | 4–7 yrs | 38–56 | 4 yrs |

When is a rabbit a senior?
The RWAF gives an approximate guide by size: small breeds such as the Netherland Dwarf and Polish are senior at 8 years or older; medium breeds (from dwarf lops up to about 3.5–4 kg) at 6 or older; and large and giant breeds such as the Continental Giant and French Lop at 4 or older. PetMD similarly describes seniors as 5–8 years old, depending on breed. For a mixed or unknown breed, the calculator uses Oxbow's general figure of about 5 years.
The RWAF stresses that these are guidelines: some rabbits show signs of ageing sooner than others. Arthritis and spondylosis are common and under-diagnosed in older rabbits, and dental disease often shows up as eating less, choosing softer foods, weight loss or drooling.
Caring for your rabbit at every age
- Hay first: PetMD recommends unlimited timothy or alfalfa hay (depending on age), fresh greens and a small amount of pellets. The RSPCA explains why: a rabbit's front teeth grow about 3 mm a week, and chewing hay keeps them worn down.
- Regular vet checks: PetMD advises a routine exam and dental check every 6–12 months with a rabbit-savvy vet.
- Spay or neuter: unspayed female rabbits have a high risk of uterine cancer and often live shorter lives (PetMD).
- Live indoors and with company: indoor rabbits are safe from predators, extreme weather and contagious diseases, and the RSPCA says rabbits are highly social and shouldn't live alone unless a vet advises it.
- Watch the scales in old age: Oxbow and the RWAF both note that senior rabbits tend to either lose weight and muscle or become overweight, so weekly weigh-ins help.

Frequently asked questions
How do you convert rabbit years to human years?
Count about 3 human years for each of the first 4 months (12), add about 1 per month until age 1 (20), then add about 6 human years for every year after that. A 3-year-old rabbit is 20 + 2 × 6 = 32 human years.
How old is a 1 year old rabbit in human years?
A 1-year-old rabbit is about 20 human years old — a young adult.
How old is a 6 month old bunny in human years?
A 6-month-old bunny is about 14 human years old, in the teenage stage.
How old is a 2 year old rabbit in human years?
About 26 human years.
How old is a 5 year old rabbit in human years?
A 5-year-old rabbit is about 44 human years old — around the age many rabbits become seniors.
How old is an 8 or 10 year old rabbit in human years?
An 8-year-old rabbit is about 62 and a 10-year-old about 74 human years old.
Is there a scientific rabbit age chart?
No. No veterinary association publishes a rabbit-to-human age chart, and the chart authors say it is an estimate. We use The Bunny Lady's chart (20 at age 1, then +6 per year); other charts use slightly different numbers, such as about 21 at age 1.
How long do pet rabbits live?
rabbit.org and the RSPCA say pet rabbits typically live 8–12 years, and some live to 14 or 16. Small breeds usually live longer than giant breeds.
When is a rabbit considered a senior?
Around 5 years for a typical rabbit (Oxbow). The RWAF's size guide says small breeds are senior at 8+, medium breeds at 6+ and large or giant breeds at 4+.
How can I tell how old my rabbit is?
If you don't know your rabbit's birthday, ask your vet or the rescue it came from for an estimate — young rabbits are still growing, while seniors often show weight changes, stiffness or dental problems. Then enter that estimate above.
This calculator gives an estimate for education and fun. Every pet ages differently — for health decisions, talk to your veterinarian.
