Quick answer

Pet budgies typically live 5–10 years (Merck Veterinary Manual), and 7–15 with good care (PetMD). English show budgies live marginally shorter lives — about 7–9 years vs 8–10 (TheVetDesk). The oldest budgie on record is Charlie, 29 years 2 months (Guinness Book, as reported); the longest documented in the AnAge database is 21 years.

Budgie lifespan: how long do budgies live?

A pet budgie usually lives 5–10 years. That is the average budgie lifespan in the Merck Veterinary Manual's table of popular pet birds, and it's the range this calculator uses for pet-type birds. PetMD, writing for owners, puts the budgie lifespan in captivity at 7–15 years with good husbandry, and the Budgerigar Council of South Australia says 10–15 is possible "with proper care". So when people ask how long do budgies live for, the realistic answer is "around 5 to 10 years, and well into the teens for a lucky, well-kept bird".

The budgerigar life span (you'll also see "budgies life span" or "budgie age span") surprises people in both directions. Some expect a pocket-sized bird to last only a few years; others have read that budgies live 20. Both happen, but neither is typical. The figures below show where each number comes from.

Budgie life expectancy by source
SourceLifespanWhat it describes
Merck Veterinary Manual5–10 yearsAverage lifespan in its table of popular pet birds
PetMD (Sean Perry DVM)7–15 yearsIn captivity, with good husbandry
Budgerigar Council of South Australia10–15 years"With proper care"; some beyond 15
Lafeber (Ask Lafeber)about 6–8 yearsToday's average, blamed on poor genetics and nutrition
Zoo records (Young et al. 2012)5.6 years medianFor budgies that reached age 4; 819 birds
AnAge database21 years maximumLongest documented in captivity

The spread reflects different questions. Merck and PetMD describe the budgie bird lifespan you can plan around; the zoo median shows what actually happened to hundreds of birds over decades of mixed care; AnAge lists the oldest one documented. Lafeber's avian team suggests today's average pet budgie lives about 6–8 years, because many come from mass-bred lines and are fed mostly seed.

Average budgie lifespan in one line

Plan for about 7.5 years — the middle of Merck's range and the average our calculator uses — and treat every year beyond 10 as a bonus. If your question is how old do budgies live at the very most — or how long can budgies live in the best case — see the record section below. (And if you typed "how long to budgies live", you're in the right place.)

Many Americans call budgies parakeets, so you may see this searched as "budgie parakeet lifespan" or "how long do budgie parakeets live". It's the same bird and the same figures. Our parakeet lifespan guide compares the budgie with ringnecks, Quakers and other parakeet types. For comparison, the other classic first bird, the cockatiel, typically lives 10–14 years (VCA) — about twice as long; see the cockatiel lifespan calculator.

Budgie life expectancy in captivity vs the wild

Wild budgerigars live in large, nomadic flocks across inland Australia. PetMD says they live about 4–6 years in the wild, mainly because of predators, and that captive life expectancy is almost twice that. The Budgerigar Council of South Australia gives wild birds about 5–8 years.

How long do budgies live in captivity vs the wild?
BudgieLifespanWhy
Pet budgie5–10 yrs (Merck); 7–15 (PetMD)Food, shelter and vet care every day
Wild budgie (Australia)4–6 yrs (PetMD); about 5–8 (BCSA)Predators, drought and food shortages; large die-offs in dry years (World Parrot Trust)
Zoo budgie5.6 yrs median adult (Young et al.)Longest in zoo records 18.0 years

So the wild budgie lifespan is short for a simple reason: life in the outback is dangerous. The World Parrot Trust notes "large population fluctuations" during droughts, from die-offs or migration. A captive budgie avoids hawks, thirst and hunger, which is why the budgie lifespan in captivity is longer — provided the bird gets the diet and care it needs.

How long do budgies live in captivity, realistically?

Budgie lifespan captivity figures from vets assume good care; real life is messier.

The zoo study is a useful reality check. Across 819 budgies that reached age four in zoo collections, the median lifespan was 5.6 years (Young et al. 2012). Many pet budgies fall short of their potential for the same avoidable reasons: an all-seed diet, obesity, accidents in the home and illness found too late. That is good news, because those are things you can change.

English budgie lifespan vs American budgie

"English" or "show" budgies are bred to the exhibition standard: bigger, heavier birds with a large, puffed head, deep chest and long feathers that can hide the eyes. "American" or pet-type budgies — what most pet shops sell — are closer to the size of their wild ancestors.

English budgie vs American budgie lifespan
TypeBuildTypical range used hereTheVetDesk (vet-reviewed)
American / pet-typeClose to wild size: about 18–20 cm, 22–32 g (World Parrot Trust)5–10 years (Merck); 7–15 (PetMD)8–10 years
English / showBred larger and heavier, with a puffed-up head and long feathers5–9 years (our range)7–9 years

No veterinary reference publishes a separate English budgie lifespan. TheVetDesk, a vet-reviewed pet site, says show budgies live "marginally shorter" lives than pet-type budgies — about 7–9 years against 8–10 — possibly because of selective breeding for size and feathering. Other pet sites claim much bigger gaps, but we couldn't find evidence behind them.

That's why the calculator keeps the same lower bound for both types and only caps the show budgie lifespan at 9 years. A 4-year-old English budgie has used about 57% of its average, against 53% for a 4-year-old American budgie. If you're choosing a bird, the breeder's health records matter far more than the type: ask how long the parents and grandparents lived.

Male vs female budgie lifespan

Do female budgies live shorter lives? We found no study that gives hens and cocks different lifespans. Across 260 parrot species in zoo records, maximum lifespans averaged 24.8 years for males and 23.1 for females — a gap the authors called small. So the calculator gives the same numbers for both sexes and adds a note instead.

The sexes do face different risks. Hens can lay eggs even without a mate, and VCA says egg binding "is seen often in pet budgerigars, even those housed alone", often linked to diets low in calcium and vitamin D. PetMD lists chronic egg laying among common budgie problems, and AnAge notes a high rate of ovarian cancer. Males are not spared: VCA says budgies commonly develop tumours of the kidneys and reproductive organs, which includes the testicles. Either way, any hen straining to lay, or any budgie losing weight or limping, needs an avian vet promptly.

The oldest budgie on record

The oldest budgie in the world is usually given as Charlie, a budgie from England said to have lived 29 years 2 months. Burke's Backyard and the Budgerigar Council of South Australia both cite the Guinness Book for this record. We couldn't find it on the current Guinness World Records website, so treat it as a long-standing book record rather than a modern, documented case.

The best-documented figure is lower. The AnAge longevity database lists a maximum of 21 years for the species in captivity, and the longest-lived budgie in the 2012 zoo study reached 18 years.

Is there an official oldest budgie Guinness record online today? Not that we could find — which is why we label Charlie's 29 years as the reported book record and give AnAge's documented 21 years alongside it.

Can a budgie live 20 years?

Very rarely. Twenty years is about twice the top of Merck's typical range; AnAge's 21-year record and Charlie's 29 are the exceptions people remember precisely because they are so unusual. A budgie that passes 12–15 is already a senior to be proud of. In the calculator, a 12-year-old pet-type budgie shows the "beyond the typical lifespan" message, and ages beyond Charlie's reported record show a friendly error.

Common budgie health problems that shorten life

If you're asking what do budgies die of, the vet sources point to a short list of problems — most of them linked to diet or genetics. This is general information only; diagnosis and treatment need an avian vet.

Budgie health problems and what to watch for
ProblemWhat the sources saySigns
Tumours (kidney, ovary, testicle)Budgies "commonly develop cancerous growths (tumors) in their kidneys and reproductive organs" (VCA); AnAge notes a high incidence of ovarian cancer.Weight loss, a swollen belly, lameness or limping on one leg, a change in cere colour
Obesity and fatty liverCommon on all-seed, high-fat diets; fatty liver (hepatic lipidosis) "may lead to death" (VCA). Merck says it is most common in older birds on poor diets.Fat deposits, an overgrown beak, breathing harder after flying
Scaly face and leg mitesKnemidocoptes mites cause a crusty build-up on the beak and feet and can deform the beak (VCA, PetMD).Honeycomb-like crusts on the cere, beak edges, eyes or legs
Psittacosis (parrot fever)"Another common condition in budgies" (VCA). Birds can carry Chlamydia psittaci without signs. It can also infect people, so tell your doctor you keep birds if you fall ill.Fluffed-up feathers, eye or nose discharge, green droppings, breathing problems
Egg binding and chronic egg laying"Seen often in pet budgerigars, even those housed alone" (VCA), often linked to diets low in calcium and vitamin D. PetMD lists chronic egg laying as common.A female straining, sitting fluffed on the cage floor, tail bobbing — an emergency
GoitreAn underactive thyroid linked to low-iodine seed diets (VCA).Wheezing or clicking breathing, voice change, regurgitation
  • Budgie tumours are the problem vets mention most. A budgie that loses weight, develops a swollen belly or starts limping on one leg should see an avian vet soon; the limp can come from a kidney or gonad tumour pressing on a nerve.
  • Diet-related disease — obesity, fatty liver and goitre — is largely preventable by moving from seed to pellets and vegetables (VCA).
  • Infections such as psittacosis can be carried silently, so quarantine any new budgie for at least 30 days (PetMD) and tell your doctor you keep birds if you become ill.

How to help your budgie live longer

There's no guarantee, but these steps cover what the avian-vet sources agree on. The first four are the checklist in the calculator.

  • Seed plus pellets and vegetables: VCA says seed-only feeding could shorten a budgie's life, and recommends pellets as about 60–80% of the diet, with fruit, vegetables and greens up to 20–25%. Change gradually — budgies can be stubborn eaters.
  • Avian-vet check-ups: VCA recommends semi-annual check-ups for budgies; PetMD advises at least yearly visits with bloodwork and a parasite screen.
  • Daily flight time: supervised flying in a bird-safe room fights the obesity that VCA calls common in budgies.
  • A companion budgie or daily attention: budgies are flock birds, and PetMD lists social interaction as a basic need.
  • Cage and enrichment: PetMD's minimum is 18 × 18 inches, with several perches of different widths, foraging toys and a cuttlebone or mineral block for the beak.
  • Weigh weekly on a gram scale and keep a note: small, steady losses are often the first measurable sign of illness.

That is the practical answer to how to make your budgie live longer: a better diet, regular exercise, company and early vet care.

Senior budgie care and signs of aging

There's no official age when a budgie becomes "senior". This calculator uses the low end of the typical range — 5 years — as the start of the senior stage, because that's when a growing share of budgies begin to show age-related disease. Common signs of an old budgie include:

  • cloudy eyes or misjudged landings — Merck says cataracts develop in many parrots as they age;
  • stiff feet, a weaker grip or sitting on the floor — arthritis is common in older birds (Merck);
  • sleeping more and flying less, with longer, scruffier moults;
  • weight loss (or gain), and an overgrown or flaky beak.

Senior budgie care is about comfort and early help: lower the perches and add a wide, flat one, put food and water near favourite spots, keep the room warm and draught-free, and book check-ups more often. If you've adopted a budgie and don't know its age, our budgie age estimator can narrow it down from its feathers, eyes and cere — or from the year on a closed leg band.

How this budgie lifespan calculator works

% of lifespan used = age ÷ average × 100 · average years left = average − age · average = 7.5 years (pet-type) or 7 years (English)

Pet-type budgies use Merck's 5–10-year range and an average of 7.5 years; show budgies use 5–9 years and an average of 7. A 1-year-old pet budgie has used about 13% of the average, a 4-year-old 53% with about 3.5 years left, and an 8-year-old has passed the average. The "to 15 years" figure counts down to PetMD's upper range.

The life stage is juvenile until sexual maturity at about 6 months (AnAge, Animal Diversity Web), adult until 5 years, then senior. Sex and the care checklist never change the numbers, because no source gives a figure for them; they add the relevant risks and tips. Ages past 29 years 2 months — the reported record — show a friendly error. We don't convert budgie years into human years, because no avian-vet source offers a method.

Frequently asked questions

How long do budgies live as pets?

Usually 5–10 years (Merck Veterinary Manual). PetMD says 7–15 years in captivity with good care, and the Budgerigar Council of South Australia says 10–15.

What is the average budgie lifespan?

About 7.5 years — the middle of Merck's 5–10-year range. Lafeber's avian team says today's average pet budgie lives about 6–8 years.

Do English budgies live shorter lives?

Slightly, according to TheVetDesk (vet-reviewed): about 7–9 years against 8–10 for pet-type budgies, possibly due to breeding for size. No veterinary reference publishes a separate figure.

Can a budgie live 20 years?

Very rarely. AnAge lists 21 years as the longest documented in captivity, and Charlie is reported at 29 years 2 months in the Guinness Book. Most budgies live 5–10 years.

What is the oldest budgie ever?

Charlie, a budgie from England, is reported in the Guinness Book at 29 years 2 months (cited by Burke's Backyard and the BCSA). We couldn't find the record on the current Guinness website.

How long do budgies live in the wild?

About 4–6 years (PetMD), or 5–8 according to the Budgerigar Council of South Australia. Predators, drought and food shortages kill many wild budgies young.

How long do budgies live in captivity?

5–10 years is typical (Merck), and 15 is possible with good care (PetMD). In zoo records, budgies that reached age 4 lived a median of 5.6 years.

Do female budgies live shorter lives than males?

No source gives a difference. Hens face egg binding and ovarian tumours, and males get testicular and kidney tumours (VCA, AnAge), so both sexes benefit from regular avian-vet checks.

What do budgies usually die of?

Mostly tumours of the kidneys and reproductive organs, obesity and fatty liver from seed diets, egg binding in hens, and infections such as psittacosis (VCA).

How can I make my budgie live longer?

Feed pellets and vegetables as well as seed (VCA says pellets should be 60–80% of the diet), book avian-vet checks once or twice a year, give daily flight time and weigh weekly.

At what age is a budgie old?

No vet body sets an age. Our calculator calls a budgie senior from 5 years, the low end of Merck's typical range; signs of ageing include cataracts, stiffness and sleeping more.

How long do budgie parakeets live?

The same as budgies — they're the same bird. In the US budgies are often called parakeets; they live about 5–10 years.

How many years does a 4-year-old budgie have left?

About 3.5 years on average, based on a 7.5-year average. Many budgies live longer, especially with a good diet and regular vet care.
